Take off the shelf any math book and look at the parentheses in it. Here I reproduce two images I used for another answer of mine
If you look at the parentheses, you will see that they’re placed so they cover characters with ascenders and also with descenders.
Your line is unusually high, due to the accents and the square root sign, but parentheses don’t need to cover entirely such items.
What would happen if you moved the parentheses up to make them “symmetric”, but the letter between them was a “y”?
