Oversampling, sound quality and the Grid – Bitwig Forum
I was thinking about sound quality and the Grid which has, as I understand it, 4x oversampling. I’m not an audio nerd so don’t quote me on the specifics but I believe it’s supposed to improve sound quality by reducing aliasing in high-frequency content and processing at a higher sampling rate before down-sampling back to the base rate of e.g. 44.1khz.
Putting the science to one side, what I’d like to know is this – given that the Grid operates with this process to get a better sound, but that we already have some good built-in synths and FX etc, would it be possible to provide an “oversampling” container so that we can optionally try to improve the quality of these existing devices? I really like the existing PolySynth, Phase4 etc and if I could get a “free” improvement to the sound quality then that would be awesome.
I actually googled “oversampling vst” and I found some plugins that supposedly do exactly what I’m talking about so that would suggest that it’s possible. I haven’t actually tried any of them though. If this was possible then Bitwig could develop this oversampling container device (or even just a switch on some of the old devices) and then we’d get a free boost to some old devices.
I love the Grid and it sounds great but I’d still like to use some of the other stock devices and they’d get more love if they had a boost in sound quality.
Thoughts?!
