LineageOS – a free and open-source operating system for various devices, based on the Android mobile platform.

Developed by the community, LineageOS is the successor to CyanogenMod, which was launched in December 2016.

In 2009, Stefanie Jane (Cyanogen) founded CyanogenMod. In 2013, Jane secured venture capital funding under the name Cyanogen Inc., which enabled the project to be commercialized. In 2016, as part of a company restructuring that included a CEO change, office and project closures, and service discontinuation, Jane left or was forced to leave Cyanogen Inc.

The LineageOS project was created as a fork of Cyanogen and officially launched on December 24, 2016. Because Cyanogen Inc. retained the rights to the Cyanogen name, the project renamed its fork LineageOS.

Like its predecessor, CyanogenMod, LineageOS is considered free of unnecessary software, often pre-installed by the phone manufacturer or carrier, considered bloatware.

Google apps are not included by default in LineageOS due to legal issues. Users can install them via a .zip package, usually called gapp, during LineageOS installation. A side effect of using LineageOS and other custom ROMs is the impact on the Play Integrity API. In some cases, LineageOS can be run with apps that require Play Integrity by installing Magisk and some modules designed to hide the bootloader status.
