which first synth to explain synthesis ? substractive & additive (in: Instruments)

I’d sure start with subtractive and I totally agree with the “modular” suggestion.
Possibly something with the least amount of pre-routed functions, like VCV Rack (free as a standalone app) and its “VCV Core” modules.
Modular can be scaled down to the most basic building blocks (e.g. single oscillator to output) and very gradually built-up in complexity with a constant visual representation of the signal flow.
