Power section is still important, obviously. If you have more than one amp at home you can test this pretty easily – run one amp’s preamp to the other amp’s FX return (if the first one is a tube amp you’ll need a load box on its speaker outs). I’ll spoil it for you though: it’ll sound pretty different than it did through its own power amp. Just how different will depend on the preamp and power amp in question, of course.
