I’ve been asking myself this question for some time and haven’t been able to find a satisfactory answer. I feel maybe people in the DSP subforum may actually give me the answer I’m looking for.

For the sake of simplicity let’s say we have a .wav file with a single cycle of a waveform.

So we load this .wav file into a sampler and loop it. The sampler interpolates the PCM data to change the speed/pitch at which the audio is being played.
