VST2.4 hosting question: should audioMasterGetSampleRate return an integral value, and if so, why? (in: DSP and Plugin Devel…)

(Yes, I know VST2 is wildly outdated, but there are a number of ancient plugins I’d like to use without wrappers/bridges/etc)

I was looking at some old code and had mistakenly believed the return value from the ‘audioMasterGetSampleRate’ opcode to be a float bit-cast to a VstIntPtr.

But I poked around a little more and it appears, no, it’s just an integral return value cast normally to a float by the other side (the plugin, in this case).

But why? Sample rates are floats everywhere else, and …
