When I first discovered that drums could be “tuned” at all, I found this technique. First, everything goes off the kick. Pitch the kick where you want it in the mix, and don’t be afraid to use “fine” tuning (cents, aka 100ths of a semitone). Then put the kick as eighth notes. Then put the snare as every other eighth note. Now tune the snare with the pitch knobs until it sounds “right” (this is the “use your ear” part).
