I want to add to my previous comment that I’m currently trying to learn to hold my pick about 5mm further towards the tip of my thumb (still pretty much under the pad, but not as deep into the first joint), because I’ve identified that this gives me a significantly better tone without requiring any fundamental changes to picking technique (well, it makes pinch harmonics a bit more tricky, but that’s fine). It’s surprisingly difficult to get used to even small changes like that though.
