Submarine sonar echo sound (in: Sound Design)

What is “realistic” when it is about such complex psychoacoustic impressions? It would probably be “realistic” to pick up the ping directly from the generator. But the reality is different. It runs through water and what you could record inside a steel box via microphone probably sounds completely different at the end.

You probably know this sound from Moovies like “Das Boot”. But what ever you hear there is not necessarily what it really sounds like, so what exactly do you want?
