As mentioned by @hackcrr An on-premises gateway is not required. Azure SQL DB supports a cloud gateway connection, where you can configure it directly and specify it for your semantic model. In addition ,
You need a data gateway if you are connecting to an on-premises SQL Server database (not Azure SQL Database).
