I agree that technique matters more than endlessly chasing gear, especially for beginners. But I wouldn’t go as far as saying gear doesn’t matter. Microphones can sound quite different on a given voice, and a bad room can make recording vocals surprisingly difficult.

Room treatment isn’t necessarily cheap or practical either. I’ve had good results with a small vocal booth from Thomann. Or look up the Isovox vocal booth. It’s not the same as treating an entire room, but for a beginner it can be …
