Its a problematic Area in the Digital Domain with no final solution (yet). One could go higher and higher with OS as processors are becoming more powerful. Then we are also dealing with the Filters and such, which can introduce other problems. Some older Papers suggested above 500 kHz to push Aliasing back into the inaudible range; yet also in slightly different context than internal processing. So 768 kHz, which would be 16 x 48 kHz again seems pretty realistic.
