gpio – Modbus RTU serial communications

Is it possible to connect up a rasp pi to communicate to a generic ModBus industrial control board using serial communications I think with GPIO pinning and UART? Or would you recommend using some sort of USB converter?

Any tips appreciated not a lot of wisdom here…its a hobby project so it terms of what is easiest appreciated but curious to try out the GPIO pinning and UART if its possible…!
