google cloud can’t authenticate account (“something went wrong”)

followed cloud.google.com/docs/authentication/provide-credentials-adc#local-dev for instructions. every time i try to sign into my account, it gives me the same vague “sorry, something went wrong there. try again later” message.

have tried various commands (gcloud init, gcloud auth login, gcloud auth login –no-browser, gcloud auth login –no-launch-browser) but to no avail. have the latest version of googlecloudsdk installed. read a few other posts saying if you sign into your google account from the authentication screen you don’t get this error, but i haven’t had luck with this theory either. curious if anyone else has either had this problem and solved it or if im doing something obviously wrong. thank you
