Mixing real shots with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss with real-time play phases, Matrix Awakens likes to exploit one of the main themes of the Matrix saga imagined by the Wachowski sisters : comment differentiate the false from the real ? The film crew and Lana Wachowski were also personally involved in the project.
Developed by Epic Games, Matrix Awakens exploits all the new technologies of l’Unreal Engine 5 to show what some realistic photo games might be able to do, whether it’s for cinematic needs, Directed gameplay phases or populate an open world Grace to the generator of MetaHuman. Well, it runs at between 24 and 30 FPS, but it seems that it is done on purpose to simulate the movements of a film.
Curious players then have the opportunity to roam freely in a city a bit bigger than Los Angeles, either 15 790 km². Many elements are destructible, but it’s mostly how the engine calculates in real time the number of polygons needed to render a scene that is highlighted, next to a light engine which offers a result close to ray tracing, but without calling such functions. Thus, the phases of gameplay and the open world are only lit by the reverberations of sunlight, and nothing else, giving a very natural tone to the environment.
This does not necessarily mean that all games under Unreal Engine will have the possibility to be so impressive in the near future, but it gives a good overview of what the next-gen is capable of, coupled with advanced graphics technologies.
