Finite element modelling of jointed rocks

Two models of jointed rocks are proposed. The first one is considering a fine mesh of joints which are represented by an elastoplastic anisotropic continuum based on the Coulomb friction for the joints and on elasticity for the intact rock. The second model proposed is the effective discretisation of each joint separately. An interface model is developed. Each model is implemented in a large strain finite element code, and a special procedure for the numerical tunnelling is described. Finally an application (Cointe tunnel) is briefly exposed.
