Far left extremists investigated by counter-terrorism police over Melbourne arson attack

Victoria’s joint counter-terrorism team has launched a first-of-a-kind investigation into whether an arson attack on a Melbourne defence manufacturer was an act of terrorism potentially orchestrated by far-left extremists with anarchist and revolutionary ideologies.

The investigation into the attack in July 2025 on Lovitt Technologies comes against a backdrop of ASIO warnings of a rise in extremism across the ideological spectrum that makes it harder to detect and feeds into a more unpredictable security environment.
