Difficulty retaining midi input and output settings

I am just getting started with Musescore 4.5.2 (former Finale user) and am exploring midi note entry. I was able to find my Roland keyboard on the drop down lists for both, and enter some notes using the keyboard, but when I started over with a new document those fields were no longer filled. The keyboard is still listed on the dropdown list, but when I select it nothing happens–the field remains blank. What do I need to do to get Musescore to retain my midi settings?
