Can this sustained female “ahh” vowel lead be recreated with a synth/formant filter? – Sound Design Forum

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to recreate this vocal-like “ahh” lead as closely as possible with synthesis. I’ll attach a short audio snippet plus a screenshot of the MIDI notes for reference.

The snippet is not isolated: it also contains build-up drums and other track elements. Please focus only on the sustained female-sounding “ahh” lead and its timbre, pitch behaviour, and stereo width — the drums and build arrangement are not part of what I am trying to recreate.

My goal is a playable synth preset that captures this sound’s character, so I can use it freely for both sustained MIDI notes and the chopped version.

The target sound is:

-a sustained, open female-sounding “ahh” vowel
– emotional and energetic, with a slightly pushed / cry-like tone
– bright and polished, but not breathy, whispered, or a natural vocal performance
– stable in volume and vowel colour during each note
– wide, as if there is a center vocal core with subtle stereo doubles
– no lyrics, consonants, vibrato, vocal runs, or choir/harmony
– the MIDI alone should control pitch and create the rise/build

The MIDI phrase is roughly:

G#5 → A#5 → B5 → E6 → D#6

There is also a chopped version using repeated notes. That is why a synth/formant approach would be ideal: no loop clicks, every note can sustain for any length, and the same patch can handle both long notes and short chops.

My initial thought is an overtone-rich oscillator/wavetable into a formant/vowel filter, with light unison or stereo doubling and a constant amp envelope. But I’m unsure whether that is enough to get close to this kind of female vowel timbre, especially at E6 and D#6.

Would you approach this with Serum 2, Vital, Phase Plant, Pigments, or another synth? Which oscillator source, formant filter type, modulation, unison/stereo setup, and processing would you try first?

If somebody can make a close synth recreation and is willing to share the preset, I would be extremely grateful. A Serum 2, Vital, Phase Plant, Pigments, etc. preset would be ideal; a detailed settings breakdown would also help a lot.

Thanks!
