boot – If in the installation process of lubuntu 24.04 it is not create the EFI partition the system will be bootable?

I have recently installed lubuntu 24.04 on a micro SD card completely empty.
The installer have asked me to execute a manual partitioning and in that phase it has proposed me that is important to create a partition of type EFI with the following features:

  • the filesystem of the partition must be FAT32
  • the size must be at least 300 MB
  • it is important select for the EFI partition the mount point /boot/efi.

This post has confirmed my choices, but it doesn’t explain why it is necessary to create an EFI partition.

The installer says that lubuntu need an EFI partition but in an other message says that without an EFI partition the system may not boot; so the EFI partition seems not mandatory.

This other post tell that the absence of an EFI partition and if in the system is not installed any other bootloader, make all of the installed operating systems unbootable.

Question

The presence of the EFI partition (FAT32, 300MB, mounted on /boot/efi) is mandatory to execute a correct boot of lubuntu 24.04?
