How often do you change strings? (in: Guitars)

Everyone of my guitars has a note in the case/gigbag of the last time I changed strings, gauge and make. It’s not as anal as it sounds. I just scrawl the date on one of the paper string folders.
So, if I haven’t played a guitar in a while, I check the date then I check out how the strings feel. Do they hold tuning? Do they sound less than optimal? Then I change the strings. If I am about to record something, I’ll change the strings.
