I see that I am not alone with the feeling that the knob´s units are less than optimal.

Compression:this is not part of the original design, but it is very useful. Thus using percents for the scale is appropriate. To my knowledge, compression is not usually tied to a certain unit. Most of the time, when people speak about so many dBs of compression, they mean gain reduction.
