Pop or click when stopping track, even with DirectSound and half second fade out

Seems impossible to eliminate the pop entirely.  Sometimes you get lucky and the fade gets close enough to zero or something.  I’ve even tried the “Fade In/Out DSP,” no luck.  This is on multiple computers, running different versions of Windows, DACs, etc.

All I want is to be able to click the stop button and have the audio stop without any noticeable artifact.  Apparently this is difficult to achieve.

Thought it might be something to do with de-initializing a DirectSound playback instance, plausibly, so I’ve tried running audio in the background and stopping the foobar2000 while something else was sounding, to ensure DirectoSound was still “running,” but the clicks still happen.

This should be easy… right?
