From a Casio PT-1 to 800 plugins – Instruments Forum

My first synth was a Casio PT-1, the little baby blue one from the ’80s. It did one thing, and it did it astonishingly well. I sometimes think about how astonished that kid would be by what I have now: 800+ plugins. I can open any one of them and spend an evening following a sound somewhere I didn’t expect to go. That’s more than I’ll ever fully explore, and while it can make it hard to settle on anything, I don’t want to lose sight of how fortunate that is.

I’m learning that I don’t have to turn every possibility into a decision. Some instruments become familiar companions. I’ve had Bazille since 2014 and I still reach for it. Others give me one good afternoon of discovery, like the wave of sample manglers that’s landed lately. There’s room for both. Even the wandering, the unfinished patches, the happy accidents, the sounds I save without knowing what they’re for, feels like part of developing a language of my own.

Some days I miss the simplicity of that PT-1. But what I want to cultivate isn’t fewer options; it’s trust: that my curiosity has value, and that I’ll recognize when it’s time to stay with something. I won’t hear everything these instruments can do. But I’ll hear things that move me, and every so often, I’ll make something that feels unmistakably mine.

Anyone else living with a library this size? What’s your Bazille, the one you keep coming back to?
