Incorrect plugin versions – KVR Studio Manager Forum

There doesn’t seem to be just one place to get the version number and so the version number can be different depending on where you look for it. I don’t know what the Windows System is doing to get the version. It doesn’t seem to be able to get a version for a VST3 plugin at all*. I think the KVR Studio Manager is using the same type of query that Tracktion’s pluginval software uses**. There is also a version displayed in the UI in most plugins.

Sometimes the version number is different in different plugin types (eg. VST3 vs CLAP) and sometimes it’s different in the internal query (which pluginval shows during its testing output) and the UI. Most of the plugins in my “KVR Newer” list are plugins that have the UI version updated but not the internal query. In some cases, the version number is written into a .js file in the VST3 plugin path.

The only truly consistent thing I’ve found is that if you let plugin developers know that they forgot to update the version number that plugin hosts can query, they don’t care.

* You might be able to do this if you change the file extension to .dll

** @Ben, can we get pluginval or something like it integrated into KVR Studio Manager?

Surely there must be consensus by now…
