I had the bigger XL 3 for a while and it was pretty good, but I didn’t use it to control my DAWs at all (I use an SSL UF1 for that), so I can’t really comment. From what I recall, it came loaded with custom templates for most major DAWs, though. I bought it specifically for controlling a couple of my hardware synths/drum machines and, yes, it was actually very easy to set up custom templates with their software.
