Analog Obsession Releases MuChild, a Free Fairchild 660 Emulation Plugin

Analog Obsession, known for its free analog emulation plugins, has released MuChild, a recreation of the legendary Fairchild 660 Vari-Mu compressor.

Analog Obsession used black box modelling rather than component-level modelling to efficiently capture the fundamental character of the hardware. The developer explained, “We captured the circuit characteristics based on SPICE simulation. Achieving accurate tone with low CPU load is the new approach.”

MuChild adds three modern features on top of the original hardware controls: an external sidechain input, an HPF sidechain filter adjustable up to 1kHz, and a Dry/Wet Mix knob.

Additional controls include Input, Threshold, Time Constant, DC (ratio and knee), and Output. The plugin uses no oversampling, instead incorporating lightweight anti-aliasing.

MuChild is available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats for macOS 10.11 or later and Windows 10 and 11.

It is available as a free download from the Analog Obsession Patreon page.
