google cloud platform – How to bulk update descriptions for datasets shared via Analytics Hub without modifying each source dataset manually?
I have a GCP project (let’s call it “Tier”) that acts as a central data-sharing hub across multiple teams. Using Analytics Hub, I’ve created an exchange with several listings that reference datasets from various source projects. This way, all shared datasets are accessible from the Tier project.
We want to standardize the Description and Documentation fields for all listings. However, I’ve discovered that:
-
Linked dataset descriptions cannot be edited – when I try to edit the details of a linked dataset in my Tier project, the Description field is not available (see screenshot). Only Labels and Tags can be modified, even though I’m a BigQuery Admin.
-
Listing descriptions are independent – the description set on the Analytics Hub listing does not propagate to the linked dataset’s details in BigQuery.
-
Source dataset descriptions propagate, but the only way to have an updated description on the linked dataset is to modify the description on the original source dataset in each respective project.
I’ve tried:
-
Editing the linked dataset details → Description field not available
-
Editing the listing description in Analytics Hub → Doesn’t update the linked dataset’s description in BigQuery
Is there an alternative to manually updating the description of each source dataset across all the different projects?
Ideally, I’m looking for one of these:
-
A way to programmatically update dataset descriptions in bulk (e.g. bq CLI)
-
A method to override/set the description on the linked dataset side
-
Any other approach that doesn’t require manual access to each source project
