ScioSense unveils low-power ultrasonic flow module
The module has been designed to deliver highly efficient flow measurement and leak detection with minimal power consumption and builds on the capabilities of its predecessor, the UFM-01, offering a fully calibrated flow measurement unit that includes a spool piece with standard pipe fittings, twin ultrasonic transducers, and a precision circuit based on ScioSense’s proprietary ultrasonic flow converter chip.
According to the company, the UFM-02 operates at an average current of just 50µA, enabling devices to run for years on a standard primary battery.
The technology is aimed at a wide range of applications, including water purifiers, boilers, heat pumps, coffee machines, smart toilets, taps, irrigation systems, and agricultural equipment. It is also suitable for use in swimming pools, spas, and cooling systems. In industrial and commercial settings, the module can monitor total flow through filters, allowing replacements based on actual usage rather than fixed time intervals.
The UFM-02 is available in two sizes: a 0.5-inch thread with an inner diameter of 13.3mm and a 1-inch thread with a 23.7mm inner diameter. Additional variants with 3/8-inch and 1.5-inch threads are planned. Flow capacity ranges from 20 litres per minute for the smallest size to 450 litres per minute for the largest.
Unlike traditional mechanical sensors, the UFM-02 uses ultrasonic technology without turbines or moving parts, which ScioSense says improves reliability and lifespan while enhancing sensitivity to low flow rates. The smallest version can detect flows as low as 0.03 litres per minute, making it suitable for leak detection.
The module offers two connection options: a four-wire pulse interface providing up to 450 pulses per litre, and a 10-wire SPI cable delivering digital data such as total volume, filtered flow rate, and liquid temperature.
