This may be excessive but I mount them on a piece of timber first. 1. it makes it easier to put screws where you need them and 2 it brings them out a bit further from the wall which is handy if there are other things around the hanger. If you can’t find a stud where you want try a length of timber attached to studs and attach to that.
Also, I find dry wall screws are fine as long as you have at least 1 screw into a stud. The shear pressure is vertical which is a LOT stronger than horizontal …
