partitioning – What is the purpose of the EFI partition in the boot process of lubuntu?

I have recently installed lubuntu 24.04 on a micro SD card completely empty. During the installation process the system have proposed me that is important to create a partition of type EFI and that partition must have the following features:

  • its filesystem must be FAT32
  • its size must be at least 300 MB
  • it is important select for it the mount point /boot/efi.

This post has confirmed my choices, but it doesn’t explain why it is necessary to create an EFI partition.

What is the purpose of the EFI partition in the boot process of lubuntu?
