Mulab & external hardware midi instrument (in: MuTools)

hallo!
I can’t figure out how to use event generator and event processor with my midi hardware instruments.
to explain myself better, I “add track” and “choose target module” by selecting my midi interface, so
I don’t have any slot to set event generator and event processor.
should I deduce that event generator and event processor can only be used within virtual instruments?
sorry if the question is perhaps stupid and many thanks for your help
