Usually a compressor doesn’t really “trigger” any envelopes, rather it detects the signal level (absolute value for peak compressor, or short-term RMS average for .. well RMS compressor) and then puts it through an envelope follower (the “attack” and “release” usually control how fast the envelope follower follows going up and down respectively)… and then you apply some sort of thresholds and ratios and what not on the result to get the actual gain reduction.

What “make up gain” usually means…
