Question – Install BusyBox on stock Android ROM/Recovery

Hi

I am trying to install BusyBox on a phone with a stock Android ROM/Recovery (aka, the one that came preloaded with the device), I’ve seen some posts mentioning this is possible, but they usually resort to flashing a ZIP file via recovery, which I cannot do.

No custom ROM’s or recoveries exist for this phone, but I want to generate a scatter file for use with SP Flash Tool, should I want to do some more poking around in future (and so I can learn how to use SP Flash Tool). The tool I am using is MTK Droid Tool, which throws the error “Unknown ROM Layout, backup NOT possible” and the website says the solution is to install BusyBox.

The phone is currently systemlessly rooted using Magisk. It is a TCL 306 (6102H)

I’m half tempted to just compile my own build of OrangeFox, since I am learning about Android development, however there must be an easier way, so figured I’d try asking first.

Things I have tried (that I remember):

Installing BusyBox APK from F-Droid (every operation failed)
Installing ADB Insecure Magisk Module (did nothing)
Remounting / or /system as rw (I don’t remember exact errors, but both methods said no)
Manually copying BusyBox files over to their respective folders (can’t as I don’t have write access to /system)

All of these were tried either over ADB with su or directly on the phone with a terminal emulator also with su rights.

So, does anyone know how to accomplish this?

B
