Infinite login loop whithin Kali linux (lightdm+xfce)

After a long session, I rebooted my Kali (VM running whithin Virtual Box) and after typing my credentials, I was sent again on the login screen. If I type the wrong credentials, I get an error message.

What I’ve done in the first place :

  • Login with Alt+F1 onto a terminal
  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get upgrade

After a reboot, the problem was the same.
I tried to give .Xauthority the right owner and permissions (chown), nothing changed.

I removed lightdm and installed gdm3 : I finally managed to boot in graphical mode (however, it takes a long time for the interface to show up after giving the credentials).

But as I wanted to reinstall lightdm (as it is the regular login interface for xfce), I got the same issue, even if after properly reinstalled it.

So, by now, I’m stuck with this gdm3 login interface whithout any possibility to turn back to lightdm.
