I started pondering which parts of a VCO electronics circuit actually make the oscillator unstable enough for it to sound analog, instead of sounding digital.

I know that the exact wave cycle time when the oscillators capacitor gets discharged varies slightly. But what are the actual things that affect this randomness in timing when the capacitor gets discharged?

Below, for reference, is a simple block diagram of a saw wave oscillator.
