RStudio won’t open – R GUI does – RStudio IDE

When I try to open RStudio, nothing happens. I get a spinning wheel for about 5 seconds, then nothing.

RStudio version: 2023.06.0+421
OS: Windows 8.1
R version: 4.3.1
have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both R and RStudio, restarting computer, resetting RStudio’s state by renaming the %appdata and %localappdata folders. If I try to change the software rendering by holding down CTRL while opening RStudio, nothing happens. I also tried to delete any .RData startup files, although I couldn’t find any and am not sure if I was doing it correctly.

I’m wondering if there is a compatibility issue with my old OS, but I also see several posts here with a similar issue and different OSs—sadly with no resolution in most cases.
